Yarn purchases in Cape Cod

At the end of April, we travelled to New England for a business meeting of mine, but we went a couple of days early to drive around (and take pictures of lighthouses).  We drove from one end of Cape Cod to the other. In York, we made a quick stop at The Yarn Sellar.  Great store, very helpful people.

While there, I made two souvenir yarn purchases.

This is Malabrigo Rios in the color Leo - a very nice, deep, cobalt blue.  There is some variety of tones in the yarn - lovely.  I bought two skeins (total 420 yards).

I also bought two skeins of Malabrigo Rios in Camaleon - wonderfully colorful.

Seasonal Yarn and Patterns

One of my favorite yarn stores is Fibre Space in Alexandria, Virginia.  I've only been there twice, but it's a great yarn store.  A week or two ago, I received one of their regular emails. They were featuring a bundle of mini-hanks of yarn from Blue Sky Fibers. I purchased the Fright and Delight set.

What attracted me to this set were the free patterns from Blue Sky Fibers.  I downloaded the pumpkins, acorns, and leaf patterns (from this page)

Poema Tweed

We were recently in Las Vegas / Henderson, and I stopped on Sin City Knit Shop (Henderson) again.  Great shop, helpful staff.  This time I met the person who dyed this yarn.  That was fun.

I, of course, purchased yarn.

The yarn is Laines du Nord, Poema Tweed.  It's a blue green yarn (of course) with lots of yardage.  While I was in the store, I saw a scarf knitted with light weight yarn on larger needles, and I liked it.  She didn't have the exact yarn, but this is the same brand.  It is color 506.

Yarn-in-waiting

In the spirit of keeping a better record of the yarn I purchased (and have not yet used)....

This pink and black yarn is from Fibre Space, a lovely yarn store in Alexandria, Virginia.  The yarn is from Neighborhood Fiber Company - it is Studio Worsted in the colorway Dupont Circle.  Charmingly, their yarn colors are named after area neighborhoods.  This scarf from 2012, was knit with colorway Georgetown.

While I was at Fibre Space, I also purchased these scissors.  After my purchase, the store clerks helpfully wound my yarn while Steve and I sat outside in their lovely green space.  The packaged everything in the canvas bag under the scissors.  Visit this store if you get a chance.  Love it.

I purchased this yarn at Sin City Yarn Shop in Henderson (or Las Vegas), Nevada in 2022.  No, I haven't made anything with it yet.  The company is Sin City Yarn and Roll the Dice is the name of the yarn.  As far as I can see, there isn't a colorway on the tag.  Pretty, isn't it?

So, that was my 2022 yarn purchase from our visit with Josh.  We also went to Henderson (which is right next to Las Vegas) in 2023, and I purchased this:

This is Socker Mom Fibers Ornament Set (I also bought a pattern).  It contains four 5 gram skeins of yarn in red, green, blue, and cream.  In my next post, I'll show you what I've made with it. It's lovely, soft yarn - superwash merino with 25% nylon.

One last yarn purchase.  This is black wool and a rainbow roving that I purchased (online - this is not souvenir yarn) to make thrummed mittens.  Notice I wrote "to make."  This is how the wool looked yesterday, and continues to look. It's lovely, but I haven't knit with it yet.  I follow the Yarn Harlot on Patreon - which I very much enjoy.  She did a knit along for these thrummed mittens.  It sounded like fun, so I ordered the yarn from River City Yarns in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  (Note that River City Yarns is no longer selling yarn - looks like great classes, though).  The black Yarn is River City Yarns Epic yarn.  I purchased the roving from River City Yarns, but it is from Fleeceartist.com . It is Merino Silver in the colorway Hibiscus.  Their yarns look wonderful (as a browse the site) - seems like a great place to purchase yarn (not just roving).  Will I ever knit the thrummed mittens?  I don't know.

By the way, if you want to know what thrumming is, it is apparently a Canadian thing.  You can learn more here.

Yarn in the wings

This yarn is waiting in the wings for when (or if) I ever finish the stacked cowl.  It's soft and cooshy, and promises (I hear it whispering to me) to let me use a larger needle than I am with the stacked cowl, and to let me knit mindlessly.  I can't wait.

The yarn is from Kanawha City Yarn Company.  If you are in this area, I highly recommend it!

And then - it gets a little fuzzy.  They were kind enough at the yarn store to wind the yarn for me.  Don't you love that.  I'm certain she gave me the tags, but I don't know what happened to them, so I am uncertain what this yarn is.

I think - because I found this tag in the room where the yarn was - that it is Quince and Co, Osprey, in the color Aleutian.  (For my future self, it's color 148, lot 006. I bought two skeins of 170 yards each).  When I go to the website of the yarn, its description is just what I would expect - Aran weight, soft, cooshy, wool.  The color is a little different, and that is the only part that is giving me pause.  So, I plan to ignore my uncertainty and go with the tag I found.

This yarn is destined for a nice, easy, knit in the dark and don't worry about stacking, scarf.

Camaleon Yarn

My closest local yarn store is this one: Kanahwa City Yarn Company.  Yesterday, I saw a post on their facebook page to this pattern: Hurricane Hat, with a suggested yarn of Malabrigo Worsted yarn.

We went for a hike at Coonskin Park, and, finishing a little earlier than expected, we went to the yarn store, and I bought three skiens of Malabrio Rios yarn in the color Camaleon.

I think it will become a hat and a scarf.  Looking forward to knitting it.

Vermillion yarn

While we were traveling through Ohio, visiting Lake Erie Lighthouses, (see previous post), we walked through the town of Vermillion.  It was lovely - I recommend it.  As we turned the corner, we walked right up to a local yarn store.

It is the Cast On Yarn Studio, and you can read about it at this link.

I looked at lots of yarn there, and bought three skeins of Cestari Yarn.  It is a two-ply worsted weight in blue and green.  Each skein is 170 yards.

Go visit Vermillion.  Buy yarn and ice cream, visit the shore, and see the lighthouse.

Seattle yarn, part 2

I spoke earlier about our trip to Seattle.  I shopped for yarn (twice, yes, I know) in this store.  It's called So Much Yarn, and it is located near Pikes Place Market.  Cool place.

Even cooler story - we were talking to the owner, who asked us where we are from.  She is also from West Virginia.  Amazingly small world.

When I went back, I bought this yarn.  The colors are Seattle Seahawks colors, but I don't care.  I love the colors.  The company is Raven Frog Fibers, located it Sitka, Alaska.  Funny thing - I recognized the company and realized that I had bought a skien of yarn from Raven Frog Fibers when I was in Alaska (see this post).  With that yarn, I made this scarf.    Looking forward to seeing what I knit with this giant skien - maybe two scarves?

Seattle Yarn

Pretty yarn, right? I purchased this at So Much Yarn in Seattle.  It is a California yarn, specifically dyed for this store.  It's La Jolla yarn from Baah Yarn, and the colorway is Market Flowers.

It is a perfectly appropriate colorway name considering the number of flowers for sale in this city, espeically at the Market.

DC Yarn

During my younger son's spring break, we went to Washington, D.C.  When we planned the trip, the assumed we would be arriving earlier than the peak for the Cherry Blossoms, but because of our odd weather in early 2012, the peak was early, and we hit it exactly.  It was a beautiful trip!  We had a gorgeous day to walk around and enjoy the trees.
We stayed in Alexandria, and I found Fibre Space, a lovely yarn store.  Above is the yarn I bought.  Starting in top left, and going clockwise:
  1. This is a beautiful yarn that I skipped the first time (yes, I visited the store twice), and then went back for.  It is dyed by a local company -- Neighborhood Fiber Co.  It is the colorway Georgetown and is a rich, deep blue.  It is a superwash merino, worsted weight.
  2. The next yarn is a sock yarn by Dragonfly Fibers.  It's bright greens and dark blues -- beautiful colors.  It is called Djinni Sock in the colorway Weather Girl.
  3. The next yarn appealed to me solely because of its color, which is a warm, heathery teal, edging toward blue.  It's Berroco Vintage DK, half acrylic, 40% wool and 10% nylon.
  4. The next image is of a set of needles I bought.  I can't remember the brand now, but each size is a different color.  These are US size 4 DPN.  Pretty.
  5. The last yarn is Manos del Uruguay Maxima, an extrafine merino wool, kettle dyed, worsted weight. It's a blend of deep greens.
Great yarn store.

Yarn purchases

How about some talk about stash enhancement? Here are two yarns I recently purchased. The first is a skein of Socks the Rock, mediumweight, in Fire on the Mountain. It will become socks, although I'm not sure what pattern yet.

The second is a skein of Noro Kureyon, in color #187. It's very rainbow-ish. I think it, and the other two skeins of it that I bought, will become another stripped scarf, this time in a 2X2 ribbing pattern.
